Alignment Response
Murmering insects- the text moves downward and to the left side of the page. It also slowly appears instead of just appearing suddenly. This gives the appearance that the words are not supposed to be powerful and to me they seem dainty and whimsical.
The earth scene: The word earth is also alligned with air and water, the subtle images that appear alongside these words help to define them. If the shapes moved and were no longer alligned with the words, the scene would loose its effect.
The air scene: the text and the words spoken in this scene give the words emphasis that earth air and water didn’t really have. It directs the audience to the poems meaning and what they should be focusing on.
The water scene: the background music as well as the poem and the curve of the water makes me think the author wants us to connect water and tears. The background noise sounds like waterfalls which ties the theme of water together.
The overall allignment of the scene may seem unorganized and random but it is actually very intentional. It is supposed to mimic nature, the air is highest the earth is in the middle and water the lowest. Though they are not mentioned in that order, the display is organic and artistic.
Emphasis Response
1. My eyes are drawn to the sketch pad right away, and then to the writing being written on the sketch pad. I understand the idea that the author is against Digital Rights Management but not sure why. It could be more effective if in the drawing explained what is wrong with Digital Rights Management.
2. The “criminal” drawing is clearly what is being emphasized by the sudden end of movement. It creates focus and tells the reader that this is the point of the video.
3. The sound clip creates the mood for the video. The author has the end of each drawing timed with the clashes in the song. It makes Digital Rights Management seem threatening.
Contrast Response:
1. Watch 0:22-0:36 of The JUMP’s “Call for Papers.” Notice the words, the gray box, the cartoon background, and the sound. Do you think any of these elements contrast? If so, which ones and how so (specifically, what makes them different from one another)? What effects do you think this use of contrast has on the audience and the purpose?
The sound is the first thing i noticed in this section of the video. It has modern contemporary music while behind that there is jazzy piano. I think it is trying to complete the idea of retro and contemporary. I think it effects the audience because it demonstrates the students ability to create a video and use retro and modern design techniques.
2. Watch 0:55-1:08 of The JUMP’s “Call for Papers.” Notice how this is similar to the clip from question 1, yet the background no longer includes the cartoon. First, describe what elements are contrasting. Next, explain why you think the cartoon background was deleted from this section. What happens to the contrast now that the background is black? Which element is now the most emphasized, and how do you think this helps convey the purpose of the text?
I think it was an interesting choice to delete the cartoon characters but an extremely effective one. By having only text and music it almost elminates the significance of this part of the movie. It makes it seem more instructional and less creative. It explains the assignment well and since there was no work being displayed, cutting the cartoon was perfect.
3. Imagine you’ve been asked to design a flyer to post around your campus advertising The JUMP. What would the flyer look like? Which element(s) would contrast and to what effect?
My flyer would look a lot like the movie itself. I would the same style of cartoon in the background. The same man in a suit smiling, with the title The JUMP displayed in the center with a gray box in a modern font. I think this would best flow with the video and give the reader an idea what the movie will be about.
Organizational Response
The response was to organize 5 photos to tell a story. I cant figure out how to attach my photos but how you organize pictures can completely change the message you are sending the audience. It is so important to make sure that the pictures are good quality, but also spending a good amount of time deciding how to display them.
Adding text can also change the organization of the photos. I think that even if the pictures were not in the best place, if you were able to explain each picture it would still be able to flow smoothly. Being able to pursuade the audience is huge.
Proximity Response:
1.Did you group certain categories of information together? How did you group them—typographically, by placing them closer together, or in some other way?
When designing my book cover I organized the font by style, using the same font for the title and the author. The title is most important, so the font should be larger and more centered. I wanted to tie in the sub-title though, since it is the next most important thing to the title, it should be almost centered and a little bit smaller. Finally I made the title left centered because it looks more clean lined to me.
2. What are some limitations you’ve encountered in laying out visual elements in a traditional way? What are some other ways you might want to organize the information on a book cover that might work better in a non-traditional format?
I think that it might have been useful to use color as a tool on my book cover. It is hard to get a sense for what the book is about or the genre without a sense of style.
