project 4

When making my portfolio I plan to use most of the steps from the 10 on the website. The steps are all used for a reason and they allow the user to get the most out of your website. The only one I may not use is including my social networking information. It is okay now to have social networking stuff on my website but later on it may appear unprofessional. For instance when I am applying for jobs if I want to use my website for my resume I wouldn’t want my potential new bosses seeing my tweets from the weekend before. I do think it would be helpful to include a link to my blog though because it would be tailored towards my graphic design  and art projects.

My favorite  websites listed on the page are Claire Scroggins, Shannon Moeller, and Henry Jones’. I like Claire Scroggins page because I like the color scheme, the layout of the website and her slogan. I think she affectively displays her credentials while keeping her website whimsical and playful. Shannon’s website is affective because the contrast in the images with the background. I like the retro color scheme and the way she displays her designs. I like Henry’s website because even though it’s really masculine and the colors are dark, the textures are really appealing to me. I like the curved edges on the logo and the brown, gray and white color scheme.

Project 3 pitch

For my project three I would like focus on the visual mode. As a child I always loved reading books, primarily because of the pictures. Anything that was colorful or different appealed to me. For this project I want to use some of the images from my favorite books and tv shows and explain aurally why I like them. I haven’t quite figured out how I want to transition from image to image. I might want to transition using colorful and bold headings.

Peer Review Comments

After recieving feedback from my peers I found a few things helpful that I can fix in my project:

I need to incorporate more terms from the text book to better explain my rhetorical situation. Also I need to tidy up my page a little, deleting unused links and unneeded commentary. One of my peers commented saying one of my fonts is hard to read because of the color so I might try to edit the color and make it more user friendly.

Mulitmodal Texts and Citations

These mulitmodal texts are all credible assets to my project because they provide examples of uses of rhetoric in political campaigns.

Part 1: Annnotation

1. This video is made by the Rob Mckenna Campain. This ad is used to convey Rob Mckenna’s plan of action as governor of the state of Washington. It is successful because it clearly lays out how Mckenna wants to continue providing safety for women and children, create new jobs and stimulate the economy and focus on math and science in schools.

2. This  ad provided by Rob Mckenna explains why he is qualified to protect the state of Washington. He has already been the attorney general and shows his tract record with protecting “Washington’s most vulunerable”

3. This commerical shows Robs plan of action for creating jobs in the current economy, and how he plans on preparing the next generation for the future.

4. This commerical for Jay Inslee shows his approach to creating new jobs. It explains why he is qualified to suggest green energy and green jobs because he wrote a book on it. He also shows how he has the support of former president Bill Clinton.

5. This ad is madeby the Jay Inslee Campaign and they are tryng to show voters that Rob Mckenna is not qualified for governor. Their approach is to show Rob as having empty promises, and not having the best intentions for our schools.

6. This text created by the Jay Inslee team is also trying to show voters that he is qualified to be governor because he will be able to transform the job market in Washington. He mentions his book on clean energy and how he would be able to support green jobs and make Washington the job wave of the future.

Web Analyses

The first web project was about the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. I really liked the layout of the site. It had a nice flow to it and it had all of the Dove ads in the center in little squares. From there you could click on each square and view the ad fully. The website authors comments were directly below each ad.

I liked the color choice of the website, and I think it was a good strategic choice because the author used the same blue as her site background as the blue Dove logo.

The second website was about life based web comics. I thought this was an interesting topic, and until this website I had no clue what they were! I think the author did a great job of present the material in a professional way. The layout is clean and extremely easy to follow. The colors the author used work well with the comics themselves, since they are bold colors and so was her page.

The one major thing I dislike about this page is that there is no easy way to move from one text to another. If you want to see one slide at the end you have go through all the other slides as well.

For my project I want to use colors in my site that are in the comericals. I think I want to make my page like a political canidates, and have the canidates pictures at the top with a slogan in the middle. From there I will have a main body of text that illustrates the two canidates, Jay Inslee and Rob Mckenna. Below this I will have all my texts center alligned and links to those texts.

Multimodal Text Project: My plan

When looking at why political candidates are successful, often times it comes down to their campaign strategies. What makes certain politicians so successful is the use of modern day rhetoric such as commercials, social media websites and advertisements. When choosing a political focal point, I decided I wanted to pick a local politician to research so I chose the Washington State candidates for Governor Jay Inslee and Rob Mckenna. Both plan on focusing their campaign on creating jobs in Washington, especially when the job market has recently declined in our state and aiding and supporting the middle class.

I will look at what audience they are targeting and what strategies appear to be effective. I began my research by reading a seemingly unbiased article in the Seattle Times.

IX:Color, Framing, and Sequence

 Color Response:

In the black and white photo, there are certain elements that are emphasized. At first glance I noticed the little girl. She is the focus of the room because the lighting is on her. The little girl is looking at a closet full of clothes, and this is where my eyes go to next.

In the colored photo my attitude changes toward it. In the previous photo the mood seemed stark and hopeless. In this photo I see a little girl in a colorful room excited to try on clothes. In the black and white photo I see a lonely girl who doesn’t want to try on clothes.

I think the color of the photo intensifies certain attributes of it. In blue lighting, the mood is off. It seems out of place for a little girl in her own room. It seems dark and has less energy. In the photo with the red lighting, I think it is more fitting for a little girl. Most girls like clothes and are excited to dress up, and when putting this photo in red lighting, it makes her look happier and more at ease in the situation. The blue lighting almost makes it appear tense and forced.

Framing Response:

In the photo of the woman walking with the three men looking at her the framing is very unique. She is the focal point of the photo and seems to be the center of the framing. Besides this display of framing, there might be a vertical split where the sidewalk is shaded and two of the men are walking closer together. But this is not the first frame I notice.

The lighting can be used to change the setting and even the frame in the picture. It creates a more individual frame around the girl, making her lighter than the rest of the figures in the photo. It also creates diagonal frames along each individual person.

In the black and white photo changes the composition of the photo. The woman is no longer the focal point but rather the man on her right is. My eyes are drawn to the man in the white shirt because it stands out most.

Post for 9/4 alignment, contrast and emphasis…

Alignment Response

Murmering insects- the text moves downward and to the left side of the page. It also slowly appears instead of just appearing suddenly. This gives the appearance that the words are not supposed to be powerful and to me they seem dainty and whimsical.

The earth scene: The word earth is also alligned with air and water, the subtle images that appear alongside these words help to define them. If the shapes moved and were no longer alligned with the words, the scene would loose its effect.

The air scene: the text and the words spoken in this scene give the words emphasis that earth air and water didn’t really have. It directs the audience to the poems meaning and what they should be focusing on.

The water scene: the background music as well as the poem and the curve of the water makes me think the author wants us to connect water and tears. The background noise sounds like waterfalls which ties the theme of water together.

The overall allignment of the scene may seem unorganized and random but it is actually very intentional. It is supposed to mimic nature, the air is highest the earth is in the middle and water the lowest. Though they are not mentioned in that order, the display is organic and artistic.

Emphasis Response

1. My eyes are drawn to the sketch pad right away, and then to the writing being written on the sketch pad. I understand the idea that the author is against Digital Rights Management but not sure why. It could be more effective if in the drawing explained what is wrong with Digital Rights Management.

2. The “criminal” drawing is clearly what is being emphasized by the sudden end of movement. It creates focus and tells the reader that this is the point of the video.

3. The sound clip creates the mood for the video. The author has the end of each drawing timed with the clashes in the song. It makes Digital Rights Management seem threatening.

Contrast Response:

1. Watch 0:22-0:36 of The JUMP’s “Call for Papers.” Notice the words, the gray box, the cartoon background, and the sound. Do you think any of these elements contrast? If so, which ones and how so (specifically, what makes them different from one another)? What effects do you think this use of contrast has on the audience and the purpose?

The sound is the first thing i noticed in this section of the video. It has modern contemporary music while behind that there is jazzy piano. I think it is trying to complete the idea of retro and contemporary. I think it effects the audience because it demonstrates the students ability to create a video and use retro and modern design techniques.

2. Watch 0:55-1:08 of The JUMP’s “Call for Papers.” Notice how this is similar to the clip from question 1, yet the background no longer includes the cartoon. First, describe what elements are contrasting. Next, explain why you think the cartoon background was deleted from this section. What happens to the contrast now that the background is black? Which element is now the most emphasized, and how do you think this helps convey the purpose of the text?

I think it was an interesting choice to delete the cartoon characters but an extremely effective one. By having only text and music it almost elminates the significance of this part of the movie. It makes it seem more instructional and less creative. It explains the assignment well and since there was no work being displayed, cutting the cartoon was perfect.

3. Imagine you’ve been asked to design a flyer to post around your campus advertising The JUMP. What would the flyer look like? Which element(s) would contrast and to what effect?

My flyer would look a lot like the movie itself. I would the same style of cartoon in the background. The same man in a suit smiling, with the title The JUMP displayed in the center with a gray box in a modern font. I think this would best flow with the video and give the reader an idea what the movie will be about.

Organizational Response

The response was to organize 5 photos to tell a story. I cant figure out how to attach my photos but how you organize pictures can completely change the message you are sending the audience. It is so important to make sure that the pictures are good quality, but also spending a good amount of time deciding how to display them.

Adding text can also change the organization of the photos. I think that even if the pictures were not in the best place, if you were able to explain each picture it would still be able to flow smoothly. Being able to pursuade the audience is huge.

Proximity Response:

1.Did you group certain categories of information together? How did you group them—typographically, by placing them closer together, or in some other way?

When designing my book cover I organized the font by style, using the same font for the title and the author. The title is most important, so the font should be larger and more centered. I wanted to tie in the sub-title though, since it is the next most important thing to the title, it should be almost centered and a little bit smaller. Finally I made the title left centered because it looks more clean lined to me.

2. What are some limitations you’ve encountered in laying out visual elements in a traditional way?  What are some other ways you might want to organize the information on a book cover that might work better in a non-traditional format?

I think that it might have been useful to use color as a tool on my book cover. It is hard to get a sense for what the book is about or the genre without a sense of style.

U of O

The most important part rhetoric, is marketing your target audience. After viewing the University of Oregon’s website, it seems their website is mostly directed at prospective students and alumni. Upon arrival, the first thing I noticed located center of the webpage, was a commerical for their sports team, with a link below to the “Alumni Spotlight”. On the side of the page was links to tours around campus, the art and culture at U of O and about halfway down the side column is a link the for the current students. Though they seem to be mainly targeting Alum I would think it is the students who use the website most! Afterall, they are the ones who need to be most up to date about what is going on around campus and with classes.

Uses of Rhetoric:

Visual: The school colors and pictures of football game days gives the impression that the school is very spirted. If their target audience is Alumni, they are going to feel more inclined to donate and become boosters by reliving their days at U of O.

Linguistic: Highlights important news such as upcoming games and undergradute breakthroughs and contributions to society.

Spatial: The most prominent features on the page are located dead center and in bold, drawing your eyes in. This is also visual and has many of the same uses of rhetoric.

Life in a multimodal world

With so much technology and social media given to us; our world is filled with so many types of rhetoric influencing our every move. With media informing us about our favorite celebrities to commercials convincing us to try a new product; but is there a difference between mulitimodal and multimedia?

From first glance at the two words, I would have thought no. Multimodal means mulitiple modes of rhetoric (linguistic, visual, aural, gestural and spatial) and a combination of those modes. Where as multimedia is a singular medium of communication that reaches the reader. when looking at the word choice of each definition I noticed that media is referring to readers. I would think that this is talking about the linguistic, visual or spatial modes of rhetoric. Conveying gestures and aural rhetoric would seem difficult via writing. The difference is slight but also dramatic, music is one of the most powerful tools of rhetoric someone can use and it is not mentioned as a type of media.

Linguistic rhetoric to do: The statement made by the white house conveys a great deal of good linguistic rhetoric. (for whatever reason i am not able to attach the quote made by the white house) The statement is reaching out to the citizens of Japan and showing them Americas support during the time of the earthquake in Japan. Words like “our friends” and “whatever assistance [needed]” shows that we do not take pity on the people of Japan but rather we are trying to helping our friends in a time of need.

Visual to do: When comparing two of my friends twitter accounts I can instantly tell what they are trying to portray about themselves, one of the people I follow is a comedian and his picture is lighthearted and all of his tweets are about irrelevant things going on in his day. His background is himself in a banana suit. One of my other friends is my art professor. Her picture is her at an art gallery and all of her tweets are from her favorite artists or musicians. Her background is a painting done by the artist Monet.

Aural to do: I tried to open the link for this assignment but it doesn’t exist.

Spatial to do: When i went to the University website (zzusis) The first thing I noticed was to go to My Student Center, located in the center of the page with a different font. The University is trying out a new way of organizing and managing students classes so I am sure they want to direct people to the new website right away. If i scrolled to the bottom I would see the link for campus dining, which doesn’t even apply to all students since the majority of students live off campus in University housing.

Gestural to do: For this assignment I went to the White House website and watched the most recent speech made by Obama on Medicare. This is a serious debate and one that could potentially decide his outcome in the upcoming election. It was important for him to keep a calm but serious tone, and his gestures remained friendly and welcoming. He gave a warm smile at times when it seemed appropriate as if to make the citizens comfortable with Medicare.
